In lieu of the iris, we usually see a dozen soldiers with a half-and-half mix of 9mm pistols and M16A3's, plus a few boys on the two M2 Brownings (located at either side of the base of the ramp). Yes, directional explosives exist (claymores, for one) but the 'gateroom isn't all that big, and the danger of ricochets is high, to say nothing of the problem of just the sound of the explosion at such close quarters operating like a flashbang, deafening the defenders and making things harder on them. The most likely reasons are the fact that most RPGs or rockets don't actually arm until they've traveled further than the 'gateroom is long, and the problem of explosives tending to distribute their fragmentary payloads in all directions. Spartan IV deploy in fireteams (not squads) of typically five each.ĭefenses on the 'gate have never, to my recollection, included explosives.
